Determining Breast Implant Size For Breast Augmentation By A Plastic Surgeon In Maryland & Virginia
Determining Implant Size
One of the most challenging things to do during a consultation for breast implants is to determine what you want in terms of breast size. First we need to know what size you currently are and then determine, to the best of our ability, what size you will be after placing an implant. Most women come with a general idea of what size they want to be and think they know what size they are. Many times they are not wearing the right size bra. They have not been properly fit and have been left to guess when buying bras. It doesn't help that lingerie manufacturers differ in how they size their wares.
Presented below is a simple way to determine what size you are what the effects of an implant would most likely be. I have used this method for the last few years and find it accurate and easy to use. It is from a discussion article published by Dr. Edward Pechter of Los Angeles and can be found in the journal Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, 121(5), 348-350e, May 2008.
First measure your band size by placing a measure around the circumference of your chest beneath your breast crease, measure in inches and round up to the nearest inch.
Next measure your breast width by placing the tape measure near the middle of your chest where your breast begins and measuring across your breast to the outside where the breast ends. For small breasted women this can be done while sitting up, while for larger breasted women or those with some ptosis (droop) it should be done while lying down. In all cases, measure across the nipple to include the breast. You will note, while looking at the table (http://www.breastaugmentationmd.com/DeterminingBraSize.pdf), that cup size varies with band size. This means that a C cup in a small woman is different than a C cup in a larger woman. This explains why breast implants come in volume sizes and not cup sizes.
When a patient is seen for the first time, we will determine their current size and then place an implant OVER their breast, and re-measure to get an idea of what size they would be with the implant.
